Tsuki no Shizuku is a grape wrapped in crispy solid molasses. It’s a traditional local specialty sweet in the Koshu Region and sold at many stores in Katsunuma, Yamanashi Prefecture. The sour-sweetness of the grape and sweetness of the molasses, that dissolves in your mouth, combine to create a great flavor.
It is said that the creation of this sweet was coincidental when a confectioner in the Edo Period (1603-1868) mistakenly dropped a grape into a molasses pot. The Kofu Kaimono Hitori Annai (Kofu Shopping Guide) published at the end of the Edo Period noted that a few confectionaries sold Tsuki no Shizuku, and the Kai Meisho Sugoroku (Great Sites in the Kai Region Sugoroku board game) listed Tsuki no Shizuku as an extremely high-quality sweet. This shows that it was already known as a specialty sweet of the Koshu Region in the Edo Period.
It is included in the list of Special Food of Yamanashi to be passed down to the next generation. It is only available from September to November, when Koshu grapes are in season. (It is available until March at some stores.)
