Kurihara-shuku was the next station after Katsunuma-juku when traveling from Edo. It was located around Shmo-Kuriharai in present-day Yamanashi City. According to a drawing of Kurihara-shuku from 1806, the road turned sharply to the right before reaching Daio-ji Temple from the east, continued straight for 300 m, and then turned sharply left after passing the approach to Omiyagosho-jinja Shrine. This design was used as a defensive measure to prevent enemy soldiers from approaching in large numbers.
It had a main lodging (honjin), sub-lodging (waki-honjin), an administrative office that helped manage the post station (toiyaba/ tonyaba), and many inns (hatago). According to the Shimokurihara Village Ledger for 1842, there were 20 inns here. According to Shukuson Taigai-cho (Overview of Post Stations and Lodgings along the Five Highways), written in 1843, the number of inns in Kurihara-shuku was fourth among the 25 post stations on the old Koshu-kaido Road. Large-scale markets were often held and flourished with many visitors.
