In 1192, Isawa Goro Nobumitsu (Takeda Nobumitsu) transferred the separated spirit from Tsuruoka Hachimanu-gu Shrine, which was deeply associated with the Minamoto family (Genji), to the Kai Region and founded Isawa Machiman-gu Shrine as the shrine for the Minamoto family in the Kai Region. It enshrines Emperor Ojin, Emperor Chuai, and Empress Jingu as deities. When building the shrine, it is said that Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, donated about 75 million yen (at today’s value) and a beautiful Japanese poem.

This shrine had been worshipped by the Takeda Clan. All of the ceremonial archery performances passed down by the clan were performed here. At present, on Sunday at the end of March closest to the spring festival or the first Sunday in April, the ritual horseback archery (Yabusame) ceremony is held.
Many votive pictures of horses made in the Edo Period (1603-1868) are dedicated to the Hall for Votive Horse Tablets (Emaden), 11 of which are cultural properties designated by Fuefuki City.
