A large zelkova tree stands in the playground of Uenohara Elementary School. Designated a national natural monument, it stands 28 meters tall with a root circumference of 10 meters and is estimated to be more than 800 years old.
It was once a sacred tree for Mitake-jinja Shrine, located north of Uenohara Elementary School; however, about 5 meters of the trunk was buried in a large land reclamation project carried out to build the elementary school in 1873.
The tree now has a large hollow in the trunk and needs to be supported with posts. However, the tree has been successfully recovering through a project led by the Uenohara Elementary School PTA. If you would like to view the tree, please ask the school staff for permission via the interphone.
