Ichiri-zuka are milestones placed every four kilometers (ichiri) along the Go-Kaido Roads (Five Highways) starting from Nihombashi. They were created during the Tokugawa Shogunate by building up mounds of earth on both sides of the road. They allowed travelers to keep track of distance, and were used in the calculation of standard wages for laborers or hired horses.
This ichiri-zuka is situated to the rear of Horo-jinja Shrine in the Tsukaba Area of Uenohara, which is about 18-ri (72 Km) from Nihombashi, and the 18th mound along the old Koshu-kaido Road.
The “Tsuka” in Tsukaba means “burial mound,” and shows that there were many burial mounds in the area. This ichiri-zuka is also placed on the top of a small burial mound measuring 2 to 3 meters in diameter.
