Saka Manju are made by mixing amazake made from fermented rice with dough. They have been offered at festivals and celebrations in this area. They are also a popular product from Uenohara-juku, and are popular with merchants at the market.
Along the old Koshu-kaido Road around the former Uenohara-juku are more than five stores selling Saka Manju, including an old establishment, the Nagai Manju Store. Manju contain not only bean paste, but also sweet miso with bonito flakes, leaf mustard, and salmon. Each store has its unique flavors. They make a great treat to enjoy while strolling in Uenohara.
