Tsuruse-shuku was the next station after Komakai-shuku when traveling from Edo. There was one main lodging (honjin), two sub lodgings (waki-honjin), and four inns (hatago). With Komakai-shuku, located to the south, Tsuruse-shuku opened semimonthly by turns, a practice known as aishuku. It is said that Tsuruse-shuku opened from the 1st to 20th of the month, and Komakai-shuku opened from the 21st to the end of the month.
One of the 12 guard stations in Koshu Region was situated in Tsuruse, which especially focused on regulating guns brought into the town and wives or daughters of feudal lords trying to leave Edo to visit their husbands or fathers assigned outside of Edo. In the middle of the post station, an all-night street light was built in 1803 to light the old Koshu-kaido Road and the approach to Sekison Daigongen Shrine at the top of the mountain.
