Museum Tsuru introduces the history of Tsuru City, which prospered as a castle town in the early modern period.
The Gunnai region was unsuited to rice farming because of its location in the mountains devoid of flat land in a cold weather region, so local residents engaged in silkworm raising and silk weaving since ancient times. It is said that Akimoto Yasutomo, who ruled the domain in the Edo Period (1603-1867), not only promoted river improvement works but also encouraged his retainers to engage in the production of silk goods on the side. Thus, branch shops of major silk merchants in Edo came to be located in Yamura, which prospered as a distribution hub of Gunnai textiles.
The museum showcases the history of Gunnai textiles and their role in the economic development of Tsuru City during the Edo Period, and offers a video display related to the legendary haiku poet Matsuo Basho, who stayed in Yamura.
The extravagant floats that are pulled through the streets during Hassaku Festival, and the decorative drapes that adorn the floats are also on permanent display.
