Yamura-jo Castle used to stand in the area that is now occupied by Yamura Daiichi Primary School and Tsuru City Hall.
In 1633, the Akimoto Clan, which originally served as aides to Tokugawa Ieyasu, relocated from Joshu Souja (Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture) to the Yamura Domain, which governed the entire Gunnai region. As domain lord, Akimoto actively developed the castle town of Yamura, where the original town divisions remain to this day. The Akimoto Clan used Yamura-jo Castle as the residence of the domain lord and Katsuyama-jo Castle as a fortress for Yamura-jo Castle.
Three generations of Akimoto rulers—Yasutomo, Tomitomo, and Takatomo—governed Gunnai over a period of 70 years up to 1704 as domain lords of Yamura. When the clan moved to Musashi no Kuni Kawagoe (Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture) in 1704, Gunnai was placed under the direct control of the Edo Shogunate.
