Mononobe-jinja Shrine is situated right near the trailhead of Mount Daizokyojiyama north of Isawa-cho, Fuefuki City, in the precincts of Daizokyo-ji Temple. According to one theory, it is the oldest shrine in Yamanashi Prefecture.
It dates before the establishment of the Yamato Dynasty and has its roots in the Mononobe Clan, which served the Yamato Imperial Court after the reign of Emperor Jinmu. The shrine was said to be founded by an attendant of the Mononobe Clan when Takeshinouchi Sukune and others made an inspection tour of the east as messengers of the Imperial Court.
Along with Yamanashioka-jinja Shrine and Kaina-jinja Shrine, Mononobe-jinja Shrine is listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho roster of nationwide shrines compiled in 927 during the Heian Period (794-1185), accompanied by a note specifying its ranking status in 863. It was originally situated in Mount Mimuroyama, a small mountain at the foot of Mount Daizokyojiyama, but it was transferred to its present location in the Kamakura Period (1185–1333).
The main shrine building was lost in a fire in 1889 but it was rebuilt in 1912 and remains to this day.
