Soto-jinja Shrine, Tenjinsha Shrine, Tenjinzuka Kofun Tumulus

A hot spring called Iwashita Onsen is located in Kamiiwashita, Yamanashi City. Having a history of 1300 years, it is said to be the oldest hot spring in Koshu. Soto-jinja Shrine enshrines a hot water god as the god that governs Iwashita Onsen.
A shrine called Tenjinsha was initially founded in this place in 1601, but Soto-jinja was transferred to the precincts of Tenjinsha in 1921. Thus, the names of both shrines are inscribed in the stone pillar that stands at the entrance to the shrine.
In the vicinity of the shrine, there are five tumuli collectively called Iwashita Kofungun, designated a Historic Site of Yamanashi City. One of these is Tenjinzuka Kofun, located in the precincts of Soto-jinja Shrine. It is a round tumulus that was built between the latter half of the 6th century to the beginning of the 7th century, with a horizontal stone chamber measuring 9.1 meters in length and a ceiling made of six huge stones. The stone chamber is the largest of all tumuli in the prefecture.
