Akashiba Village is home to folk dwellings that display a number of traditional architectural styles, from thatched-roof dwellings of the Edo Period (1603-1868) to tiled-roof houses of modern times. The villagescape is mostly characterized by three-story tiled-roof houses having a Koshiyane roof (a small roof over a raised section of the main roof) which appeared after the Meiji Period (1868-1912). The raised portion with a Koshiyane roof was used as space for cultivating silkworms when sericulture had flourished.
