Fumon-ji Temple is located in Onoda Village in Makioka-cho, Yamanashi City. It was said to be founded by Yasuda Yoshisada of the Kai Genji Clan during the Kenkyu Years (1190-1198), and houses Yoshisada’s mortuary tablet. The main deity of the temple is a wooden seated Yakushinyorai image characteristically holding a medicine jar in its left hand placed on its knee and displaying the Semui hand sign, or Abhayamudra, with its right hand. It was said to be created during the Tenpei Years (729-749) by Gyoki, a priest who endeavored to spread Buddhism from the Asuka Period (592-710) to the Nara Period (710-794), and has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Yamanashi Prefecture. The image is 78.8cm tall, and is carved from a single block of cherry tree. The hole made by the primitive Seguri method of hollowing out a sculpture from the back can be seen on the back of the image, speaking of its old history. The image is not normally exhibited, but it is unveiled for public viewing on the last Sunday of March every year.
