Kannon Bodhisattva is a goddess who has the power to save people from misfortune and earthly desires. An eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva is the main deity of Joko-ji Temple and is called Yoroido Kannon. Shinra Saburo Yoshimitsu, founder of the Kai Genji Clan, enshrined the deity in Yoroi-do Hall himself, along with his suit of armor.
Legend has it that when Yoshimitsu went to assist his brother Yoshiie who was losing ground in the Ohu Battle (Early Nine-year War 1051-1062, Later Three-year War 1083-1087), he took with him the Yoroido Kannon and was protected by a strange but powerful warrior who appeared out of nowhere.
Yoroido Kannon used to also be deeply worshipped as a guardian goddess of horses, and received many believers from the Saku area on the First and Second Days of the Horse in February. Particularly on the First Day of the Horse, food stalls, playhouses, show tents, and other such attractions filled the precincts with large crowds.
