Tametomo-jinja Shrine was built in 1185 by Takeda Nobuyoshi, a descendant of the Kai Genji Clan, and enshrines Minamoto Tametomo. It was transferred to the precincts of Takeda Hachimangu Shrine in 1541 by Takeda Shingen.
It is said that Minamoto Tamemoto, who was banished to Izu Oshima Island after suffering a defeat in the Battle of Hogen in 1156, took on the name of Takeda Tametomo after returning to the Honshu main island accompanied by two ogres and seeking shelter with Takeda Nobuyoshi.
Tametomo-jinja Shrine was restored in 1816 by Fukasawa Bunbei Minamoto Naofusa, a direct descendent of the Minamoto Clan, and others who lamented its decline. The main building displays beautiful wood carvings and an image of Minamoto Tametomo created in 1841.
