Rokusho-jinja Shrine was initially built as “Rokusho Daimyojin Shrine” in 1202 by Hemi Motoyoshi, the eldest son of Hemi Mitsunaga. It is said that Takeda Shingen himself enshrined the shintai, or the object of worship believed to contain the spirit of a deity.
Hemi Mitsunaga was the eldest son of Minamoto Kiyomitsu, who established the foundation of the Kai Genji Clan. In 1193, he took part in the “Fuji no Makigari,” a large-scale hunting event held by Minamoto Yoritomo with the participation of a large number of low-ranking vassals, and was given the Hemisuji Suwako area for his distinguished services. At the same time, he was ordered to erect a shrine as a guardian shrine of the area.
The shrine was dedicated to various important gods related to the creation of the land of Japan and to the emergence of human beings in Japan, beginning with Izanagi no Mikoto. Thus, praying at Rokusho-jinja Shrine has the same merit as praying at six different shrines.
