During the post-war reconstruction following the end of World War II, Mount Yatsugatake and the foothills of Mount Fuji were designated for development in Yamanashi Prefecture. The Daitoho district (former Kobuchisawa-mura Village, Kitakoma Province) was also one such development land in Kobuchisawa. A monument commemorating its development now stands in the premises of Daitoho Community Center, inscribed with the date of settlement and the number and names of settlers.
From September 1945 immediately after the war, some 90 families of 270 war victims, demobilized soldiers, and repatriates settled in the Kobuchisawa development land. Because few settlers were experienced in farming, it is said they were forced to engage in long hours of labor, and became migrant workers during the cold, harsh winters.
In 1948, the Kobuchisawa Kaitaku Agricultural Cooperative was established, and from 1953, many of the settled farmers began raising dairy cows, shifting from grain farming to dairy and cold, highland farming.
