Nirasaki-juku was the next station after Kofuyanagimachi-shuku when traveling from Edo, and an important hub for transportation at the junction of the Koshu-kaido Road, Sunshin Okan (Sumpu-Shinano Highway), and Saku Okan (Saku-Koshu-kaido Road). It was also a trading center for commodities to be transported along the Fuji River. From the time the jinya (headquarters of local government administrations) built by Hitotsubashi Clan was completed in 1753, this post station flourished as the center of the local administration.
It only had a main lodging (honjin) and 17 inns (hatago), but no sub-lodging (waki-honjin). Along the street where Nirasaki-juku is located, the frontage of some houses is laid out diagonally rather than parallel to the street, which gives the appearance of a saw blade.
This is a characteristic of Nirasaki-juku remaining from the old days. This design may have made it easier to place goods in front of the houses, or to block dust and horse dung being blown by strong winds.
