Kamitorisawa-shuku was only 1 km away from Shimotorisawa-shuku, the next station to the east. Because of their close proximity, the two opened semimonthly by turns. This style of operation by two post stations was called aishuku and was described in the Shukuson Taigai-cho (Overview of Post Stations and Lodgings along the Five Highways): “Kamitorisawa-suku opened during the first 15 days of the month and Shimotorisawa-shuku opened during the last 15 days of the month.”
Only a few traditional houses remain; however, the Yamaguchi Family Residence built in the Meiji Period remains as it was, and a stone monument at the site of the main lodging (honjin) shows that the Emperor Meiji stopped here during his journey to Yamanashi.
