Saruhashi-juku was the next station after Kamitorisawa-shuku when traveling from Edo. It is located near Saruhashi Bridge, which is well-known as one of the three unique bridges in Japan.
At the end of Saruhashi Bridge is the east end of Saruhashi-juku. The street is approx. 350 m long according to the descriptions in “Walking along the Old Kaido Road – Old Koshu-kaido Road” (Gaido wo Aruku – Koshu Kaido), and the current signal at Saruhashi is almost in the middle of the post station.
It was a relatively large post station not only with one main lodging (honjin), two sub-lodgings (waki-honjin) and 10 inns (hatago), but also a theater where plays were performed in the Edo Period (1603-1868). It flourished with travelers who stopped at inns and tea houses to enjoy the great view of Saruhashi Bridge, stayed overnight or rested before continuing their journey.
