Saruhashi Bridge is included in the three unique bridges in Japan with Kintai-kyo Bridge in Iwakuni (present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture) and Kakehashi Bridge in Kiso (present-day Nagano Prefecture). It is 30.9 m long, 3.3 m wide, and 31 m high supported by four-layered posts stretching out from both sides of the cliff without piers.
It is unknown when this bridge was built. It is said that Shirako, a gardener from Baekje (an ancient Korean kingdom) succeeded in building the bridge after being inspired by a group of monkeys crossing to the other side of the river in the Nara Period (710-794).
The bridge was rebuilt nine times in the Edo Period (1603-1868). The current Saruhashi Bridge was restored in 1984 based on historical materials written in 1851.
