Mount Mitsutoge rises 1785 meters above sea level on the borders of Tsuru City, Nishikatsura Town, and Fuji Kawaguchiko Town.
Mount Mitsutoge is a mountain for ascetic practices, founded by En no Gyoja Ozuno, who also founded the Shugendo sect during the Nara Period (710–794). In 1832, Kutai Shonin entered the mountain, rebuilt the main shrine and spiritual purification hall, cut open an approach, and restored the Mount Mitsutoge Buddhist faith.
