Kai no Kodo History Park was created in 2019 in commemoration of Yamanashi Gakuin’s 70th anniversary. It is situated in the Sakaori District of Kofu City, home to Yamanashi Gakuin University and High School.
The Sakaori District in the eastern part of Kofu City is home to the starting points of nine ancient roads that are collectively called Kai Kusuji (Wakahikomichi, Nakamichi Okan, Sunshu Okan, Kamakura Kaido, Chichibu Okan, Ome Kaido, Hosakamichi, Hemiji, and Bomichi.) The region thus served an important role as a transportation hub and a center of cultural exchange since around the 7th century when the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) and Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) were written.
The park is located near the Yamazaki three-way intersection that is the starting point of Ome Kaido Avenue, across the street from Marishitenson-do Hall. A commemorative monument with the Kai Kusuji carved in black granite and information panels for each road are installed inside the park.
