Dr. Satoshi Omura, laureate of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, opened Nirasaki Omura Art Museum in 2007 in his hometown of Kamiyama Town in Nirasaki City. Based on his firm belief that “outstanding art should not remain for the sole pleasure of the person but best be shared equitably for the benefit and enjoyment for all,” he donated the museum to Nirasaki City in the year following its opening.
A large portion of the museum’s collection features the works of female artists Dr. Omura has personally collected. Other works include paintings by Western-style artists and a ceramics collection from the days of the folk art movement.
The viewing café and garden of the museum offer a panoramic view of Mount Fuji, the Yatsugatake Mountains, Mount Kayagatake, and the Okuchichibu Mountains. The large window in the viewing café that command the breathtaking vista was strategically placed there by Dr. Omura himself.
